You are clearly bad at maths I was born in 59 and I’m 60 which makes me a boomer though with the shitty schooling I had what little I have was hard earned. We are not all smug bastards who don’t care if the world burns.
I think Chlöe Swarbrick’s use of ‘OK Boomer’ was perfect, she was in the middle of her rightful speech making her impassioned point and the old boor tried to interrupt her with some comment. She had every right to fend off the comment and her timing and point was perfect. Full disclosure: my age nominally puts me in the Boomer category. but I refuse to be categorized as those who espouse regressive ill thought out policies. Their lack of thought for the future disgusts me.
Too late. You are characterized as such by how this is used.
My friend who was born at midnight on New Years must really be conflicted.
Yep. I would like to think that “OK Boomer” refers to the mindset of growing up in an anomalous period of national prosperity right before the shit hit the fan, but then I go on Tumblr and read kids talking about how their grandparents are Boomers (or sometimes GenX):
Boomers are younger than my parents, who are both still alive.
By that metric, I suppose GenX is anyone who was too young to vote for Reagan/Carter but old enough to vote for Bush Jr/Gore. Similarly, anyone who was under 22 when Friends was on the air.
Millennials would be anyone too young to vote for Bush Jr/Gore but old enough to vote for Trump/Clinton. In other words, someone whose coming of age/young adulthood is defined by the Obama Administration. Or, someone who was still in their teens when Girls was on the air.
Part of it is simply an extreme sensitivity by Boomers to be tagged with that term these days, even though it started out as a nickname for every person born in the post-war Baby Boom era. It was never meant as an insult, just as a fun tag for that era: they’re Baby Boomers. But in 2019, they do not like being reminded that they are (Baby) Boomers.
Class resentment > Generational resentment
I think americans are captivated by the generations narrative because we have a nagging sense that there’s some kind of stratification to society, but we don’t have the class concept to describe it…
The weird thing is to me…again my own personal view, not speaking for anyone else…I have found generational tags to always be fluidic. That is, both my sisters and I are technically Gen X (oldest is 67, middle 68, me 73). The middle definitely acts and identifies with the Boomer generation; my oldest and I both identify and act as Gen Xers. Its obviously not and never will be an exact science…I assume I am making sense and not saying anything radical or new here.
So…when I think of the phrase “OK Boomer” or the “Whatever Millennial” (or whatever the dismissive to millennias phrase is)…I see it not as about age, but entirely about ideology.
I fail to see how it is even an argument within this thread. Maybe as a gen-xer I am too “meh, sticks and stones, call me whatever you want, my life will go on”…or perhaps I am just to snarky and sarcastic to feel one way or another.
I saw this gif the other day on reddit regarding Gen Xers watching Millennials and Boomers fight…and it really does describe my feelings.
On the other hand when someone “insults” my generation I react with what I call…the Judd…
Somewhere a billionaire is laughing so hard he pees his pants.
OK Commenters.
