Also sometimes known as grog shops or booze barns. And, as @jyoti stated, they’re not general stores, they’re specialist alcohol retailers.

Interesting Oz descriptor/epithet: blackfella & whitefella.

Not the sort of thing you’d often hear outside of the Northern Territory these days, but still in use up there. And although either of them can be imbued with prejudice if given the appropriate context and tone, they’re mostly used as value-neutral descriptors.

Which is why I was surprised when I discovered that iTunes originally censored the name of this classic anti-racism song:

They’ve got the uncensored title on iTunes now; looks like they finally had a chat to a local.

That word makes me think of Lyndon Johnson, which is never a good thing. But that damn recording is stuck in my head and I hear it in his voice, and uuuuuggghhhh.
