Marburg.

That’s what I thought, but was not certain. The airborne route of transmission has not been seen since that particular outbreak and hopefully never will again, but the possibility exists. Scary shit, man!

Just a happy little virus jumping from species to species.

Health officials had previously filled nearly 5 million vaccines doses and expect the new funding to double the ready-to-use stockpile.

Smallpox and mpox are so closely related that immunity to one helps fight off the other. When smallpox vaccinations were terminated, the world’s immunity to mpox evaporated, and the medical training needed to combat a pox virus started to dissipate too.

Interesting take on it. But it makes sense. I know that so many of my colleagues have never seen chickenpox and would not know it, I myself have never seen measles, and might well miss it. When something is not a common threat, you think about it less. That’s just how we work.

Sloth fever map reveals where deadly disease is spreading across Europe

Whooping cough is spreading nationwide at the highest levels since 2014. There have been more than 16,000 cases this year — more than four times as many compared to the same time last year — and two confirmed deaths. And experts are concerned that the outbreak could worsen in the fall and winter months.

We have already had 2 kids fully vaccinated test positive. Most likely because:

Protection from the TdaP vaccine doesn’t last very long - Harvard Health

Because of all this, we changed the vaccine to the “acellular” kind, which has fewer side effects. We went from DTP to DTaP. And when we did, we stopped protecting children as well as before. Recent studies show that protection against pertussis goes down 42% each year after the fifth vaccine dose, which is given at 4-6 years. This means that by the time kids get to be 10 or 11, they have hardly any protection at all.

Just another place where the antivaxxers have blood on their hands.

My son’s had at least two exposures at his high school in the last few weeks. Ann Arbor schools. Pertussis is in all 5 high schools as of this week. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Just got mine updated 5 years ago, but wondering if I should get it again. We have a huge Russian immigrant community, and they (for obvious reasons) do not trust the government. They do not vaccinate, and do not take infections like this seriously. So they are a rich source of kindling for Bordatella pertussis hereabouts. I was a PICU doc for a few years back in the day. Really did not want to have to do that again, but here we are. I just wish folks would believe me over their internet mom’s group or whateverthehell.

Mosquitoes bite me all the time and I’ve seen these zebra-like vultures, hanging onto our screen door…just waiting for someone to let them into our home. I’m constantly growling at my husband to move faster when he goes outside. (He rarely gets bit.)

The kid and I are both mosquito magnets. I’ve had some success using a small one of these near the door or near where I’ve seen a mosquito inside.

I also discovered the bird bath was attracting them near the door. It’s rigged to overfill every few days, so the eggs never hatch. But obviously the mosquitos don’t know that. Took me forever to figure it out. Moved it 6 feet further from the door and it’s much better. Might want to inventory near your doors for water.

We only have a birdbath—actually a terra cotta plant tray on top of a tree stump. It’s as far from the door as it can possible be, but probably still too close (25 ft and next to our back fence). I’m sure the mosquitoes are laying their eggs in it, but the birbs use it all the time and I’m hesitant to remove it. The DynaTrap looks super interesting and I think I’m going to give it a whirl. Thanks, Kii!! :hugs:

Might be worth dropping a mosquito dunk in it. Birds won’t eat it and it won’t hurt the birds or bees. I had one in our bird bath, because mosquitoes can carry the bacteria to nearby breeding pools. But it kept floating out on the overfill days :joy:
