Hypothesizing here:
Israeli shell company buys up old, discontinued handsets, refits them as weapons and then lets “certain people” buy them at a bargain price? That would make some degree of sense. Which means it’s probably wrong.
You wouldn’t accept it in a spy novel, but it does appear like it.

Some very interesting claims (though not yet dumps of the allegedly exfiltrated files) being made by an Iran-aligned hacking group about possible backdooring of Vidisco inspection systems to assist in avoiding detection. Also claims that a battery company that does defense contract stuff handled providing the modified batteries; which is more plausible but less intriguing.
The security researcher writing them up came to my attention when he was involved with Microsoft’s egg-on-face incident around “Recall”; interesting fellow.
