Paolo Bacigalupi and AS King on writing

I just love saying the name “Paolo Bacigalupi”

And his writing is pretty awesome, too! The People of Sand and Slag is pretty f’d up if I remember correctly – very post-human meets Warhammer 40K/Starship Troopers.

I always end up feeling weird after reading his books, because people get so abused in them. Little girls getting their fingers cut off, child soldiers, heroes murdered, innocent women raped…it like real life- painful.

Certainly The Windup Girl had some sections that were messed-up to the maximum. Not fun reading in that sense, but I think he creates very fleshed-out worlds. I like near-future sci-fi not because it’s fun and light, really, but because I consider it to be essential training.
