Let this jaded old game dev impart his wisdom…
There’s only one thing you need turn yourself into a real game developer. - Make a damn game.
It can be on the web, or a mod, or on Unity, Unreal or RPG maker. The tools can be had for free and there are no gatekeepers.
If you want a job in games, nothing opens doors quite as much as demonstrating you had the commitment to make something out in the world, no matter how small.
That and the financial stability to work for a laughably small starting wage.
