That it got sued up to the eyeballs by annoyed customers is only to be expected.

That’s telling right there. Legitimate publishers see the readers as their customers, not the authors.

Penguin Random House hasn’t ditched a self-pub subsidiary. Author Solutions was a vanity press, nothing more and nothing less. And PRH hasn’t broken ties completely; it’s still letting Author Solutions run front-companies on its behalf in Spain and India.
