the people ive known who were most into this were people with little chance for economic mobility, and maybe not a lot of hope for changing their life at all.

and yet our society supports the idea of great success with ease. whether it’s instagram or tiktok making stars of random people as a way to convince others to sink their time into the platform, the lottery, everything from cinderella to star wars, or prosperity gospel stuff - there’s so many voices telling them it should be possible somehow

Like the guy who goes on IG and TikTok and claims you can be rich if you just wash windows for folks at $250 a pop, with no mention of what it would cost to buy (at least) a used car for your equipment, much less seek out folks who are willing to pay $250 for window washing because there can’t be that many rich suburban enclaves to support his business model for that many people. He preys on the magical thinkers with no regard to their welfare because it gains him followers.
