I was going for humor, since the best ‘apt response’ has already been given.
That said, I don’t consider anyone to be ‘the one who got away from me’; because I’m not chasing anyone down.
Though over the years, I have been told ‘you’re the one who got away,’ by multiple old acquaintances and crushes.
I generally just tell them I’m flattered and then blow it off; I have to live in the now.
Well, what I did say, quite recently, was something very much like: “Hey I saw that [identifying detail omitted]. Congratulations. How are you doing these days?”
And they said something like: “Oh, great to hear from you. We should reconnect.”
And I said something like, “Sure, here’s my number.”
And then they didn’t contact me, and I’ll leave it at that.
