POLL: How/why/when do you use your likes?

Consider this a data-only supplement to the main discussion here:

Poll based on aggregation and itemization of the sixty non-unique posts in thread above. Again, this thread is just the poll. Keep the discussion going in main thread.

##How/why/when do you use your likes?

  • Express agreement
  • Someone saying it better than you feel you ever could
  • Participation in what you see as worthwhile topic/discussion
  • Reciprocity for someone liking one of your comments
  • Reciprocity for someone responding to one of your comments
  • Encouragement of a new or infrequent commenter
  • Encouragement of someone expressing an unpopular opinion
  • Encouragement of a trolley solely for lulz and/or group snarking
  • Show of sympathy or empathy
  • Indirect encouragement for others to continue this commenterā€™s train-of-thought
  • A new wonderful thing you didnā€™t know existed
  • An unusual/unexpected association that expands discussion
  • Analytical insight
  • Personal experience relevant to topic
  • Feeling mad feels after reading comment
  • Giggles/chuckles/laughs/hilarity convulsions
  • Masterful snark and/or savage burn
  • An unpopular but well-expressed opinion
  • An unpopular opinion, regardless of its eloquence
  • A case example of whatever is currently being criticized in discussion

Liked for being a good use of [poll] tags.

Iā€™m kind of feeling bad for the ā€œtrolls for lulzā€ and (appropriately) ā€œineloquently unpopularā€ options, which havenā€™t been picked by anyone as of right now. Such underdogs.

The latter (item #19) is somewhat redundant with #7 and #18, so Iā€™ve contacted Rob to replace it with an item that @Wanderfound and I agreed (and one that Iā€™d meant to put on the list in the first place) probably is on some BBers lists: ā€˜apologies/concessions/change-in-viewpointā€™.

As to item #8: I figure anyone brash enough to bait rather than flag trolls would be brash enough to admit it. Worth keeping even if no one votes for it. Thatā€™ll just tell us that none polled think trolls are worth their time.

Wow agreement is at 100%. I wonder if that is because it is the first item in the poll. A cleverer poll arrangement might randomize the choices on page load

Good to see troll encouragement at 0%, too, though I expect no less of BBS.

This is a very interesting poll, thanks for creating it!

Can we build polls that way yet? Does sound like it might be useful to have a ā€œrandomize orderā€ toggle for some polls.

This is a good, thoughtful poll, so thanks for posting it!

Also, I liked it!

@discourse some improvements to polls, perhaps?

  • use full body width for poll :ballot_box_with_check:
  • letā€™s abandon button style in favor of more traditional glyphs for checkbox and radio (the whole area can still be a de-facto button, but does not need to have button styles or the green highlight) :ballot_box_with_check:
  • always show your avatar first, for the ones you voted for
  • when showing results, can we order by winners? :ballot_box_with_check:
  • ā€œVote Now!ā€ should show in primary blue color once you select any option, e.g. incite the user to actually cast their vote. :ballot_box_with_check:

OK, the result sorting was busted an hour ago, but I redeployed a fix. So now when you show poll results, itā€™s in proper order of most votes.

By the way @discourse did all the work on this, so all kudos to him, please!
