Yeah, but they got stomped in that election. I assumed that the majority of those in Quebec didn’t like the idea. But apparently banning the niqab at citizenship ceremonies (a policy which is so important that it has affected two women) polls at like 95% there.
Marois had already established herself as being pretty firmly anti-immigrant well before getting elected as Premier though. And from a number of people I’ve met who’ve lived in Montreal, casual racism (and general anti-immigrant sentiments in general) appears to be pretty common. But that could be more related to the fairly prevalent “anybody who isn’t a French Canadian should get the hell out” attitude that floats around there as well.
