Some of these hackers are just lazy. A guy brought in his computer to get fixed where I worked the other day. He got a message stating all of his data was encrypted and demanded payment to decrypt it. The reality? Nothing was encrypted. It was just a browser hijack and Trojan.
If only people would read the EULAs for apps, this kind of thing would never happen.
How to fix the problem
- Boot device into safe mode (method depends on device)
- Remove administrator privilege. Settings > Security > Device Administrator > select ransomware app > deactivate.
- Settings > Apps > Uninstall ransomware app
Or go via adb, and commandline. Or, if rooted, run ssh; dropbear does wonders. Then kill the process and delete the files.
