I could not get into any of the NT. Force Awakens was not great, but watchable, and it was downhill from there. I hate to say that I actually like the prequels better.
We know a lot of the good lines in the original trilogy were because actors like Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford changed them. I doubt actors like John Boyega were allowed much of the same chance.
And I would counter that my example was when Trek was in it’s infancy, and there was still an inkling that it could be possible.
Besides it’s called Science Fiction, not Science Non-Fiction for a reason…They used to attach unicorn horns to poodles on Trek.
As they say in Doctor Who fandom, it’s cannon until it’s not. Then it may be again, depending on the writers mood.
Lightsaber battles, but it’s all MacBooks with spinning drives falling off the impossible Death Furniture and trying to fight more than 8 seconds with scabbard-less pointy everywhere things. Darnit should I be able to cite where this was done before?
Plus hitting a Wars | Trek button (been done 28 times so far? 29.) sometime so all the top brass are bewildered despite having supposedly being trained. TIE aces go all button happy with buttons describing types of hat trick. It’s Edwin Drood, but with very off-code skywalks instead of hillocks! Padme -faking- death in childbirth with her Chloromidian OB (COB?) also a fine noir take. Spaaaaace getting out of the Traffic business, yay! Your Force Astrogation is all old and broken circadian hate, agonists! Back to your egg incubators. [Yeah I might have watched 4 or 5 Rebels ep.]
Brainspore> Jedi were complicit in the enslavement of an entire race of human beings created…as cannon fodder.
Yeah, the one guy race, who won’t really commit to his community until we [pulp bookshelves intercede: “We’re helping!”]
Nobody here taking Amy H. Sturgis’s SW MOOC the first round?
I enjoy the prequels and the sequels.
But was it worth it?
So many new people eager to share their thoughts about SW…
Wait… the Howard the Duck movie is Lucas’ fault too???
Well, he was the executive producer…
He was also the one who pushed to make it a film.
It’s similar to Quantum of Solace, a movie criticized in part because it’s villain is trying to monopolize the water supply of Bolivia. Which is nothing like the usual Bond Villain scheme but rather what real life supervillains actually do.
They did their time with Moffat.
Over all, the biggest problem with the sequel trilogy was the fact that no one had any idea where it was going. It didn’t need a B5 level story bible but it did need some outlining for sure. Also, if they wanted to buy into the director led/focused concept they should’ve locked that in from the start. IIRC the previous episode 9 directors had a script that looked fairly decent in respect to going off the beaten path for the franchise as a whole, especially with a subplot that would’ve given Finn’s character much more to do. It’s unfortunate we never got that because I think it would’ve been the big pay off for the franchise despite the uneven start and middle.
They’re all subpar, Lucas’s stuff when it was “good” was because he’d stolen it from someone competent, the disney stuff, as always, was written by commitee and was 75% fan service, the rest was recycled cliches.
Could they really not have just made the Thrawn trilogy? It’s still in publication. It’s just been sitting there since 1993! Sure you’d have to make some changes in the cast to account for aging and deceased actors, but was it not even on the table as an option?
They are, it’s called Star Wars Rebels
Ok, fair, maybe Rebels is setting the stage to bring the original Thrawn trilogy to either TV or movies at some point. I think my question still stands though.
Probably wasn’t worth it.
The best thing for me in retrospect was hearing John Williams playing in his SW sandbox again.
