I appreciate the Republican-saying-something-sensible jokes, but I think individual republicans probably say a lot of sensible things. Wasn’t it a republican who said about the bank bailouts - “We can’t have capitalism on the way up and socialism on the way down.”
I mean, obviously no one who isn’t shilling for the bizarre party line is going to make it on the presidential ballot, but some significant fraction of republicans (even of republican politicians) have to be I reasonably disagree with rather than… I don’t even know what to call the others.
But also, this was just yesterday:
It’s actually nearly as strange to see a 53-year-old in favour of legalization as it is to see a republican who is.

Most likely. That is the way democracy is s’posed to work you know: people you have to share the nation with, who don’t like you and who you don’t like, standing up in defense of their interests in an assembly… and incidentally protecting your interests as well.
And I’m sure we’ll see him say something similar about gays and lesbians any minute now. Because God doesn’t make mistakes.

All too often, politicians who want to climb the ladder say and do what the Party and the large donors want to hear. Character and personal beliefs can be detrimental to a high-ranking political career.
