Can’t watch this copy of the video without turning off my ad blocker - which isn’t going to happen - but I saw a copy elsewhere (BBC?) featuring an interview with the pilot. He says it’s a recognised procedure, which they practice* a lot.
*: I suspect that means ‘rehearse’ rather than ‘use in the field’.
