When it comes to innovation, there is no other advanced economy that outpaces the U.S. in devising ways to squeeze nickels and dimes out of those who can least afford to lose them: payday loans, rent-to-own schemes, bank fees, surprise hospital billing, food deserts, and reverse mortgages are just a few of the methods that come to mind.
