Q&A on Non-Moderation Matters (Mechanics, How-To, etc.)

This happens to me as well. It has even happened when I use a pop-out video to try and keep it running. Desktop/Firefox.

I have noticed this as well, on my iPad. Spoiler tags have become unreliable somehow. Sometimes they work and sometimes I have to delete them, select the text, and apply the spoiler shortcut again. More than once recently, I have had to frantically edit a post because the spoiler tag didn’t “take”.

I suspect it’s something to do with punctuation or whitespace in and around spoiler tags, but I don’t have a repro yet.

I’m not sure anyone has asked about this. I’m using Firefox for Android on a Samsung (S20?) phone. When I go to enter a BBS reply (like this!) the edit window appears one of two ways. Sometimes (less often, but more useful) it appears in the top half of the screen so I can see the keyboard in the bottom half. Example:

More often (& less useful) the edit window appears in the bottom half, underneath the thread topic.

When I click into the edit window, the keyboard overlays it so I can’t see what I’m typing (including where to put a cursor so I can go to the inevitable typo I’ve made when I can’t see what I’ve been doing).

There may be some toggle that goes from one mode to another, & I don’t know how it works so I’m toggling it by accident (it seems related to clicking & holding in the edit window but that’s inconsistent). Or it’s just random & sometimes I’m lucky. Anyone know which?

It was suggested that I put this request here. I saw this on a BBC article:

Would it be possible to prompt for our permission first before articles and BBS posts load anything from Twitter?

As far as I can tell, Discourse one-boxes Twitter content on the server side, so readers aren’t served any content directly from Twitter. What you see is a copy of the tweet text and images that is cached on the BBS servers.

If that’s the case, then good.

Found a reproduction of message counts on threads they shouldn’t be.

  1. Go to “New” Tab
  2. Click “Dismiss”
  3. Go back to “Latest” tab
  4. Various threads, including uninvisited ones will have message count. Haven’t figured a pattern here. The counts go away on a refresh.

Here is a quote from another source. I can add a link by pasting it in, either by itself https://example.com like this or highlighting text and then pasting like this

Well, if you search for the words “winchester mystery house swamp”

https://bbs.boingboing.net/search?expanded=true&q=winchester%20mystery%20house%20swamp

you will get this result:

https://bbs.boingboing.net/t/winchester-mystery-house-gets-permit-for-overnight-stays-and-on-site-booze/25777/13

Notice how that is a deep link to post 13 because post 13 contains those exact words.

If you are searching for just topics, then specify that you want matches only to topic title or first post, like so:

aka in:title in:first … make sense?

Maybe he found an old safe hidden behind the wall of his new house and wants to post it for sale on the site.

It looks like there is a feature called “unlist” that will hide a topic. I don’t know if that works for an individual post in a thread or not, but maybe @beschizza accidentally unlisted the post and then relisted it? I also tried logging out to see if the note was only visible to my trust level, but nope, it’s visible logged out too

I just came across this

Is this going to affect us here?

Sure hope not.

Different disco: this is DiscoURSE and the other one is DiscoRD. They’re completely unrelated creatures (but I mix them up all the time when trying to remember which is which).

Ahhh…thanks. It’s not the first time I’ve confused the two.

Whew!

I’ve been noticing on occasion, when the author of a Boing post quotes material, it sometimes appears re-quoted. Looks like a “quote-within-a-quote” followed by the same content again. So I have to catch myself, “didn’t I just read this”

Example post, Remains unearthed of one of America's first colonists, a teenage boy
Screenshot,

Apologies if this has been brought up already!
