Yes, we’re testing it out. Regulars and Leaders can create a summary for everyone on longer topics so that people don’t have to read through a ton of comments to post. Hopefully it will help combat the “didn’t read the topic but commented anyway” situation a bit, as well as allow those who want to know what’s being discussed it that don’t have the time of some of our more devoted members to read every comment an opportunity to keep up with the pace of discussion here.
It’s alpha, and the Discourse team is monitoring if we run into any issues. Feedback on the output and usefulness welcome, especially in relation to the aspects mentioned above!
@Falco1 this is a good point. Summaries should probably be removed (or remade) on relevant posts with account changes (usernames, removals, anonymizations) if you haven’t considered that already. I know this is already performed with quotes in replies.
My favorites at the moment are Related Topics (which aren’t great here because the BBS doesn’t have access to the blog post to generate context) and the AI Helper feature, like the explain one:
This thread, titled “Melizmatic’s Memeversation 5: The Tetralogy continues,” features users sharing various memes and GIFs, expressing emotions, and engaging in light-hearted discussions. Mindysan33 shared several GIFs, including Home Sweet Home, Get Comfortable Chicago, season 8 bubble troubles, and Let’s Go. BakaNeko contributed GIFs like sufe bradshaw veep and Steve Austin Bionic Man. OhHai shared montypython and hungry om nom nom.
That’s because the GIF component I created, and is used here, brings useful ALT attribute to the inserted GIFs, giving some useful information to both visually impaired humans and robots .
On that front we are planning to experiment with AI generated descriptions for user uploaded images next.
Now, full disclosure, I haven’t clicked the AI summary yet. I’m kind of on tenterhooks to see what a summary of a list is, as a list is basically a summary.
Full disclosure, summaries for topics in the boing category (same as Related Topics there) suffer a lot since we don’t have the blog post content here on the BBS (it lives in a site outside this forum). So in that category the summaries only have the title, link and the replies.
I do have a plan to fix that, but not enough time to work on it.
I feel seen. Unsettlingly, mechanically seen. As though by a robotic former governor patiently explaining my sentiments in a Teutonic monotone while staring at me with eyes glowing red.
