Q&A on Non-Moderation Matters (Mechanics, How-To, etc.)

There is a general consensus that Flossy is a very unique human being.

I certainly hope so. This is a place for Mutants, after all.

Yeah, Flossy’s true nature is no more known to me than anyone else’s here, and I meant no offense. Impressionist bot is just the impression that I get, and was definitely not meant as an insult, although it was perhaps an unintentional disservice. Today was the first day that I noticed them using gifs, and I thought it was notable. I’m a fan of both gifs and @Flossaluzitarin. Warp and woof of the wonderful bbs tapestry, or snuggly rug, whathaveyou.

I was just trying to add moar praise by editing my last post in the Praise You Like I Should topic, and received the message 422 Error. My edit appeared in the thread, but when I leave and navigate back, the edit has not been saved:

“IT IS A TRUTH UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED!”

Talking of consensus: I, for one, have no problem so far with the idea of a summary bot on the BBS. I read your concerns and can see all your points, and also be curious on how the summary function might improve. So far, it is a gimmick - and I am thinking a disclaimer that the “AI summary” is prone to produce garbage would be all that is needed.
That is to say: I’m ok with it and do not find it disruptive, dangerous or vile. This might change, of course.

It reminds me of scenarios from Ted Chiang’s stories.

One individual* does not a “consensus” make.

*Or even many of them. Correct definitions matter.

You may have misunderstood my intentionalities. Or not. I am in two minds about it and cannot reach consensus without consulting an AI model trained on both natural English and Legalese.

Your intentions here?

I do not profess to know them; just making the obvious point that none of us is “the center of the universe.”

What one person (or lots of people, in this case) finds problematic does not necessarily equate to what everyone finds problematic… and vise versa.

Small update, we have added a fix for this. When a new topic is created on boing (or someone expands with Show Full Post… an old one) we cache the content so we can use it for summaries.

Can you give us an idea of how long this beta testing phase will last?

not sure if you’re interested in straight up bugs right now, but on firefox android 121.0.1, if i select text, press the ai button and select “explain”, on the box that pops up there is a nonfunctional “copy” button

i can press the copy button, and the button turns blue ( and stays blue ), but text doesn’t wind up copied to my clipboard. and if i click in the box to copy it manually, the box ( and its text ) disappears.

I’m glad you asked that. I thought it was probably just me!

… it worked for me today

It might take, like, longer than we expect

I keep getting 500 errors when I do a search.

And this:

An error occurred: You’ve performed this action too many times. Please wait 39 seconds before trying again.

Or when tests show it’s useless and removed as a result.

… well this feature is not helpful

@codinghorror I’ve been having some weird behavior with “Show Posts”. Sometimes it won’t work, sometimes it will collapse while I’m reading it. Happened twice a few minutes ago on Atari files for trademark on Rogue, a 44-year old game it did not make and does not appear to own

ETA: Currently Firefox 121.0.1 on Windows.
