Asking what pronoun you prefer is fine in English. Japanese has something like thirty of them, all three persons. I tremble to think of the Venn diagram.

True, but it’s incredibly unlikely that someone would answer the question with koitsu, soitsu, or aitsu, so we can narrow the list down a bit.
