Ransomware crook's email provider shuts down account, so now no one can pay their ransom

The fact that it was a wiper attack rather than ransomware doesn’t shed light on whether it was the right choice to ice the account. Posteo was unaware of this development when they made that decision, operating solely on it being a matter of TOS violation regardless of the context, as I think they ought to have.

No, there is only one possible solution to your “ethical dilemma.” The email provider is not responsible for delivering the ransom or the key, just like we don’t sue them when they deliver the malware. This is exactly like when the villain says, “how sad, you force me to kill your beloved son.” Bullies around the world love to set up these “ethical dilemmas,” but we don’t have to take responsibility for their bullshit. We do not negotiate with terrorists.

Closing the account was absolutely the right thing to do.
