I dunno, man, when you got a multimedia show with lights, lasers, projectors, sound, smoke, etc - I don’t think they are too keen on renting house gear that may or may not work with their gear and that may or may not work when it needs to during the show. Though production companies are frugal, who is to say they aren’t renting some of that gear. Still, any large production like that is going to have a whole road crew and equipment for the show to set it up and get things working right.
I mean, we can definitely complain about wasteful plane trips rich people make. And in general we need to a paradigm shift on mass transit in the US…
However, a lot of these flights are part of her job. There is not an easy way to do shows internationally with out flying. Sure, she could save some carbon by not flying back for a Chiefs game or back home between shows, but she isn’t Greta Thunberg. She doesn’t have a brand about climate change being something she is a big advocate for. Even if she is a top producer, she is also the number 1 in demand artist. There are a lot of other stadium filling acts who would be traveling as much if they could. (As well as “business people” who fly off to golf on the weekend somewhere.)
I guess TL;DR, there are definitely systemic issues we should be approaching and finding solutions to, but I don’t see the value of singling out one person.
It isn’t even just “right wing” stalkers she has to worry about. Even before this, like a lot of famous people, there are people who have mental issues who obsess about celebrities and build parasocial relationships.
Yeah, and she has a job to to go speak about climate change and broaden awareness. Which is a little hypocritical, but the people speaking loudest about it, don’t give a shit about carbon footprints, they just want to harp on about “leftists doing it too”.
If Thunberg travels by plane (which she makes every effort to not do), she gets castigated for being a hypocrite. If she travels by boat/mass transit (like the time she went to Lisbon by catamaran because a conference had been moved), she’s castigated for doing it for the media stunt and being a drama queen and being a hypocrite because someone else flew on a plane.
It’s almost like it’s not got anything to do with what she does, but is about who she is and what she’s saying.
FWIW Thunberg has very much made a conscious effort to reduce her carbon footprint for travel, which is why she travels by boat and train instead of plane when feasible. I read she’s now sworn off air travel entirely. Pretty much the opposite of buying a private jet.
As I understand it the pyro, etc. part of the stage show usually travels, while the PA is rented on site (or at least on continent). But either way, she doesn’t transport her fog machines on her private jet, that’s an entirely different and additional logistical issue. What I was objecting to originally was that she needed a jet because her entourage is big enough that it would fill a commercial flight anyway. And nobody needs to travel with that many people. Not even the US president.
But her jet holds only 16 people, so that wouldn’t fill a commercial flight.
It’s not like Trumps 757, it’s a much smaller jet.
(Brainspore made a similar comment about filling a commercial flight, but I wasn’t sure if he was talking about a crew of people or vs the private jet. Trying to parse the multiple points and all.)
No, that wasn’t what I was saying. I was saying if a performer had enough people on their tour (security, sound engineers, backup dancers, lighting technicians etc.) to fill a Boeing 737, then they might as well charter a 737 for a single flight rather than have all those people buy individual tickets because the energy and carbon footprint would be the same.
A private luxury jet just for a single person and their personal entourage is a whole different level of carbon/energy footprint.
