The idea of “fundamentalism” is confusing because the “fundamentals” refer to the stated precepts of a specifically American and specifically twentieth century counter-modernist movement. But was there a point where someone gave a copy of The Institute of Biblical Law to Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab’ and said “enjoy, this will help you resist Soviet influence?”
