I know it’s great. I have no idea why a DP would be wandering around in the background during a shot and the director just stood there.

I assume the DP was walking around behind camera, i.e. behind whoever Bale was talking to in the scene… still doesn’t excuse it IMO. Just let the actors do the scene and then check the lighting.
