Revenge porn site owner sentenced to 18 years

There also could be the point of the number of victims. It´s not the idea of putting up one site, forgetting about it till it comes back to bite you in the ass.
He is a serial offender (to however many cases this might sum up to, i am guessing it is a lot at 10k+ pictures) in helping others to invade the privacy like this AND trying to ransom money of the victims. I can see how he clearly is a risk to society and not only needs to be punished but also be put away to protect „us“ from him causing harm again.

I agree to almost all you said. But i disagree with pointing out “mostly women” as if their privacy is worth more than a mans.

Not All Men !

If you do not understand that women who get tarred with the “slut” slur are affected differently by social forces than men - who usually only get called a slut in a dudebro approving way - and that women are many more times likely to be sexually assaulted - then I don’t know what to say to you.

Everyone deserves respect ! Everyone deserves privacy ! Everyone deserves to not have a shitty ex, or vindictive hook up that is going to share explicit photos and videos - and their full name and home address.

The photos were mostly of women. The media stories note there were some male victims, and probably some individuals who do not use either of these terms to self identify. What this creep did was violating and harmful, period. Sheesh.

Keep in mind, this is for something like 10,000 counts of extortion, though. He’s also very unlikely to serve the whole time.

There must be equality in court. It´s a sad fact that females get sentenced less (on average) for the same crimes than males.

Citations needed, dude, and not from MRA sources like “A Voice For Men”. Here’s some stats for ya on male/female crime to start:

I think remorse and intent also play into sentencing. This guy purposely abused these women over a long period of time with zero remorse. Those types of actions never get any sympathy.

And he was only charged for 27 counts - not 10,000 either. What he was charged with was literally a drop in the bucket with regards to his criminal offenses related to his site/extortion.

Really important point there. I imagine his sentence would have been drastically less if this had been one or two people. The long time in jail surely represents wrongdoing to a multitude of people.

Thats not even the point i was makeing. A crime is a crime. If one person comits the same crime it needs to be punished the same no matter what skin collor or gender. If it´s handled differently it´s racist or sexist.

I have no idea who “a voice for men” even are. I am german.

18 years? May be a trend. But ads for the “King” of Bail Bonds running on a news site about someone going to jail? Is a reality.

I wonder if that varies with the type of crime, though. A lot of small-time criminals are people with poor impulse control and not a lot of options. They either don’t stop to think about the consequences, or they don’t believe they have any other choice.

Putting up a revenge porn site isn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, and it’s not something you do out of desperation. This guy had plenty of time, while he was building the site, to think things over and decide that nothing would ever happen to him. Someone else in his position may be more likely to consider the matter and decide that it’s not worth the risk.

I don’t see why direct use of violence should necessarily be seen as more serious than indirect use; especially when it’s the indirect users who tend to do more damage, more efficiently, than the suckers applying violence manually one person at a time.

Sure, he didn’t directly get his hands dirty; but that’s because he knew how to delegate, not because no harm was done.

Google is your friend.

Women commit a much smaller proportion of criminal activity with the exception of prostitution, whose criminality will depend on your location. People who are non-white are disproportionately charged with criminal offenses and incarcerated in the US. This is not “justice”.

Many women are given HARSHER sentences than men who commit similar crimes, particularly women who kill their abusive partner or former partner in self defense.

Here is an academic paper which explains both sides of this coin:

Gender Differences in Criminal Sentencing

and another about women who kill in self defense and their sentencing:

Gender and Sentencing

Exactly.
At first I thought - that seems a little excessive.
Then I thought - fuck him.
I’m one of those people that doesn’t like the idea of locking up “non-violent” offenders, but this guy violated a LOT of people. He’s a sociopath of the highest order.

Empirically, that seems to be the case(especially if you can steal by white collar methods and injure or kill through reckless negligence rather than in person); but it’s not clear why it should be.

If anything, the people efficient enough to commit harm at scale are the ones we should be more concerned about.

His victims were horribly shamed, had no recourse, they got no mercy, they had no response save for a demand for money, helplessly caught in the snare of a psychopath who haunted them day and night…Imagine you can’t start a relationship without knowing you may be discovered…you can’t apply for a job, can’t move far enough away from this, all of this so this stinking wretch can experience power and extort money…He’s earned his time. Now he can think about the next con he sees, wonder if he posted a picture of their sister, relative, friend…maybe he posted the picture of some guard’s friend. Like his victims he will have ample time to be concerned, scared, helpless to respond or protect himself. Pretty hard to work up much mercy for this lad. Karma can be such a frightful beast when it sinks it’s teeth in you. Probably got 18 at 50%, out in 9 if he survives and has good time, If any of his charges carried a sex crime status he might be at 85%. Regardless he’s likely to be a changed man when he gets out. Is it fair, does it reflect justice…maybe one of his victims could offer their insight.

My guess would be about 5 years. 18 years looks excessive to me as well.

Do you reckon 5 years should just be the limit for that type of crime regardless of the number of people effected?

Edit: Hey, I can see you’re here, c’mon, I respect your opinion!
