Russia-linked Facebook ads and Twitter accounts from 2016 campaign released by House Intel Committee

So Americans not caring about US jobs and the economy, Putin was able to win America’s Funniest Meme Contest 2016? With the Rooskies being so diabolically cunning at Photoshop lulz, America will be forever doomed to 3rd world level servitude after losing the Meme Race.

Doesn’t it have the same meaning in America?

Nicely done. You’ve covered many of the main “useful idiot” talking points:

  • The Russians didn’t create all of the content, they just disseminated it under accounts impersonating American newspapers, political orgs, and individuals. Nothing wrong with that!

  • The Russians spent much less than the GOP and Dems, so what’s the big deal? It’s not like the U.S. popular vote is split almost 50-50 where a small margin could make a difference, or that a broken Electoral College would enhance the effects of the popular vote margin in certain key states. What’s a few hundred grand in highly-targetted anti-Clinton ad buys that reached over 100-million Americans in that context?

  • Bonus point for the ridiculous claim that Xeni or anyone else deploring Russian meddling anyone is saying that Russia alone is responsible for the election’s outcome.

  • Extra point for the proposition that those deploring Russian meddling can’t also deplore the state of the American political and economic system (which said Russian meddling demonstrably leveraged). It’s not like we can address two or more things at once, especially if one of those things is fairly easy to expose.

  • Another point for bringing in Tony Podesta, as if liberals and progressives opposed to Russian interference give corrupt Dems a pass, implying hypocrisy.

  • Super bonus points for incorrectly using the (rather freighted) word “hysteria.”

The only part you missed is discussing how the U.S. has been meddling in foreign elections for decades (including those in former Soviet republics), therefore this Russian interference is nothing to worry about by the famous “two wrongs don’t make a right, but they cancel each-other out” principle.

Also, you didn’t use the terms “witch hunt” or “McCarthyism” or “Cold Warriors” to makes liberals feel just awful about beating up on poor old Vlad. Just for future reference.

You’re appear to be failing at changing the subject away from the impact of the illegal foreign spending on our elections, and on to the intent and character of the people involved.

yay?

We do not punish flawed and failed character, nor ill intent, under the law here.

their affect was obtusely direct.

though that’s just a play off your typo.

I assume you meant effect, a typo I never make

Well, if you have to explain it…

Before the election Putin used a word to describe Trump which was widely translated in the West as “smart” but has an alternative translation of “colorful”. It’s nice to have these linguistic ambiguities.

These seem to be more cynical and optimized for maximum destabilization and harm at lowest monetary cost. While propaganda is as old as the world, this feels like entirely new kind of information warfare.
I’m worried that we will see more campaigns like this, possibly also targeted at other countries.

It’s only illegal in the US. I guess it might be illegal for FB to accept the roubles in Russia and deliver the ads in the US.

I guess facebook and twitter would have to integrate with some sort of handheld global positioning data transceiver, or be able to tell where your ISP is, for them to be responsible about this.

That kind of tech must be hundreds of years off, sorry to bother you with my original foolish comment. /s

Facebook is a force multiplier, run by a socially manipulable moron.

Conservatives have hit peak Poe’s Law. When the Russians can just plug “Murica” into Photoshop and sway a herd of sheep, they need take a long hard look into the things they just deep throat without question…you know, besides Putin’s cock by proxy.

I wonder if China will start utilizing this. They already have a lot of experience in manipulating domestic social media.

China doesn’t seem focused on the next Quarter. Or Year. or Decade. Or Century.

They are who is going to “win”, though not anytime soon - and only part of me is sad about that.

The Russian ads would read more like something whipped out by a staff writer for ‘The Onion’ while zonkin’ on LSD.

So Bernie’s campaign got more support from Russian trolls than from the DNC?
