What I think they should do in such situations doesn’t at all matter.
Instead, that’s up to military command to decide. Those be -hopefully- people with decades of experience under their belt.
For the same reason the opinion of a single fighter jet pilot matters little; they simply have to follow the orders given by their superiors. Another thing that comes with being a soldier.

If command for some reason decides it’s time to go in hot, well than that will be done, whether or not I, untrained civilian, or the other, the specific jet pilot, approve of it.
