I’m fairly certain we’ve be able to synthesize psilocybin since the early 60s. That wasn’t the breakthrough described here. What was just discovered was the exact enzymatic process that psilocybin is biosynthasized inside of mushrooms. Very different. also, we’ve known most the biosynthetic process for psilocybin for a long time, they just filled in the last missing piece.

Might be more permissible than you would assume. Anecdotally, this is something learned by students in pharmacy programs, maybe during o-chem series.
But that could all be wrong.
