SCTV's forgotten comedy hero: remembering Joe Flaherty, RIP

What, no “Neil Pert sucks!”? Because I really love the scenes where he is being a kind of surrogate dad to Nick. It shows a depth to the character.

He had me rolling on the floor with laughter when he portrayed Salvador Dali giving art lessons with eggs on Sunrise Semester, making a popping noise with his mouth and open hand, and presenting the Dali Edition of the Cadillac (complete with mustache & wax) where he “replaced functionality with concept!”

Pure genius. One of my all-time favorites full stop, not just among SCTV alumni.

I was on to SCTV before my best friend at school; things took off from there after I encouraged him to watch the show. For a long time, and whenever the situation comically warranted it, he’d yell “Police! Police!” in the same silly overdramatic way as Flaherty. Much later, I remember our reaction (“It’s Flaherty!”) in the theater when we saw him pop up in 1941 as the event emcee, Raoul Lipschitz. This one hurts.

That is one of the finest moments on “F&G.”

Loved SCTV back in the day; far funnier to me than SNL, though admittedly, the difference between live and taped comedy may have been the edge they enjoyed. My two favorite performers were always Dave Thomas and Joe Flaherty, who, coincidentally and arguably, had the most modest post-SCTV careers. I never could understand that. Flaherty often had a kind of manic flop-sweat persona that I found hilarious and relatable. Thanks for the laffs, Joe.
