Locusts provide a valuable food source for people and livestock in many countries. So maybe we shouldn’t just write off PE as useless.
At least not until we try eating them.

In his latest book, The Bezzle, Cory Doctorow goes into detail about these and other practices. Infuriating and heartbreaking.

And of course these firms contribute heavily to “tough on crime” politicians and lobby for more and longer prison sentences.

I can’t find words to describe how awful.

Hard to beat for-profit healthcare and for-profit prisons as the most repugnant capitalistic institutions.

And this was not even a “for-profit prison”, just the local county jail. A public institution profiting off of immiserating imprisoned persons and their families. The jail privatized some of its functions (communication) in order to spread the stolen wealth.
I think the distinction matters too: this is the neoliberal state and a core institution, jail. It’s not something that can be solved by shutting down a corporately-owned facility and returning it to public oversight – it already is run directly by the “democratically”-operated local government!
