However, the sighting – over 40 miles from the estuary – does raise the question how it might have arrived there.

Contrary to popular myth, mushy peas are not mandatory. You may get ‘looked down on’ (being polite here) in some parts, for non-mushy peas, but in others non-mushy peas are very acceptable.
