Should a programming conference host a reactionary weirdo?

Well yeah, that’s all that tiny little lady brain of yours is capable of being. And since it’s such a tiny little lady brain, it’s no wonder it can’t comprehend its own absurdity, and has to resort to snarky animated GIFs instead of, you know, “reasoned words” (because for God’s sake woman, didn’t you know that GIFs convey no non-absurd meanings whatsoever?).

Can I get more absurd? I love absurd. Why won’t people give me more absurd!

If I can’t dance to your absurdist revolution, then I want no part of it!

They do? They are just dancing distracting crap that could be better replaced with a word or a few, with the result being easier to interpret and less straining on bandwidth-limited devices, e.g. mobile phones. And don’t forget people on screenreaders. GIFs are ableist.

Apparently, you just need to hang with me more and you can get your fill!

But sexism is just fine.

Dear conference attendee,
Along with your registration for this conference, make sure you submit the survey listing the ideas and concepts that make you feel “emotionally unsafe.” We will do our best to research the personal beliefs of each and every speaker and only invite ones that we can be reasonably assured won’t say any words that will challenge you in any way.
Sincerely,
Mgmt.

As if you give even half a shit about ableism, let alone any other -isms.

Oops, I see @anon61221983 just basically beat me to it!

Yeah, like conference organizers need to be made aware that many attendees would find 19th century notions of white racial superiority noxiously disruptive.

You should avoid slippery slopes; they can be concussive!

Dudes an unreconstructed racist, who believes in eugenics, real science be damned and he hates women to boot. I’m sick of making excuses for these assholes. You should be too. At some point, we need to decide that this shit isn’t okay. it would be nice if you weren’t so utterly blithe about your fellow human beings.

[ETA] People paying money to attend should have a say in presenters.

http://lambdaconf.us/ Isn’t this on the front page?

LambdaConf is a supportive and welcoming environment, where differences are celebrated, and where people discuss ideas graciously and respectfully, even when they disagree. To help foster this nurturing community, we require that all attendees, volunteers, and speakers make the LambdaConf Pledge of Conduct.

As a participator in the LambdaConf event, I hereby pledge the following:

  • That in the words I speak and the actions I take, I shall demonstrate respect, dignity, and empathy for my fellow human beings; that when I disagree with ideas, I will do so constructively, respectfully, and graciously; and that I will communicate non-violently with empathy and honest self-expression;
  • That I shall embrace and celebrate the abundant diversity in the human species, and refuse to feel threatened by those different from me;
  • That I shall not talk or act in ways that could make minority groups feel bullied, harassed, intimidated, stalked, stereotyped, or belittled; examples of minority groups include women, people of color, lesbians, gays, and people who are disabled, bisexual, transsexual, asexual, intersex, transgender, and gender-variant;
  • That if I become aware of any behavior by others which is inconsistent with this pledge, I shall take immediate action to report such behavior to event organizers;
  • That if there comes a time I no longer wish to keep this pledge, or if I wantonly behave in a manner inconsistent with these promises, I shall immediately cease participation in the event, without expectation of refund or redress.

I hereby acknowledge that my status as participator in this event may be terminated at any time if, in the sole opinion of the event organizers, I have been determined to break this pledge.

And I am perfectly capable of recognizing those as bad ideas on my own. I don’t need the thought police deciding what I need to be kept safe from.

I love that bird and everything he stands for.

and I don’t need professional conferences in my industry to be a bully pulpit for yet another white, racist, misogynistic asshole. He can do it from home and not at conferences folks pay to attend.

Standing up against this shite is being the thought police? Really? And yelling “FREE SPEECH” when ever people like him are in the spotlight isn’t? Where is the line, then between not giving these assholes a public forum and free speech? if we can talk about where it is, bringing into the discussion how odious and dangerous his beliefs are, then how are we going to have this discussion?

That’s one thing we can ALL agree on then! All hail @anon15383236’s kick ass bird!

Does it apply even to speech that is “disagreeable” but performed outside of the conference space/time?

THAT.

I can deal with any speech I dislike. But I have special place in hell for thought cops.

I know! Totally right, insect dude. That’s what we’re talking about.

Dude, everyone here that interacts with you knows that the list of things you don’t care about includes:

  1. Women in Tech
  2. Minorities in Tech
  3. LGBT in Tech
  4. Privilege in general
  5. Racism in general
  6. Basically anything that isn’t of interest to an autistic, white European engineer who doesn’t like people

So I take your comments with a slight grain of salt. You couldn’t care less as long as your own demographic gets their toys.

Will he talk about his politics, or about his code? Should people’s activities in one area that’s orthogonal to another area be considered relevant?

Doesn’t it smell like the old ages of McCarthy’s blacklists, or, from the other side, the negative impact on one’s employment when one disagreed with the Party’s official doctrine (or did not catch its change in time)?
