Well, good. I feel like shit. Have a great night.
I wish to lecture no one, but it cannot be denied that Imperial Japan committed some horrific war crimes of their own. The United States never started this conflict with Japan and in fact Japan was fighting China in 1937. Some historians place the start of WWII at this point.
The question is do they believe their past is compatible with their present? As to my knowledge, Japan has not apologized for Korean “comfort women”, nor have they apologized to China.
It seems the comments have grown faster than I can respond. Yours is a user ID that I’ve come to recognize and respect as it is one I recognize on almost all BB articles.
To all & sundry, I was offline for a few days and cannot reply to everyone. Also, I’m (sort of) new & need to learn how to nest comments.
Let’s be honest: Japan wasn’t exactly wiling to apologize.
I don’t know what this means. Clearly various administrations in Japan’s history have been willing, otherwise the apologies would not have been made. One could argue about their sufficiency, but that’s another conversation. The Abe administration is currently reluctant to admit to Japan’s violent past, but attitudes wax and wane as they do in any other country, and Japanese culture, despite frequent efforts in the West to paint it as such, is not a monolith.
I think the word we’re looking for is equivocation.
No, “we’re” not. Please don’t attempt to put words in my mouth.
I am withdrawing from this conversation as I’m still reasonably new here and I want to keep visiting.
Elmer, maybe this can carry on at some other time.
