Square dancing was a racist hoax funded by Henry Ford to get white people to stop dancing to black music

Meh, I was not dismissing anything, but misleading headlines are just that, misleading, and they distract you from the content. It’s why we are having this conversation. Boring Boing is one of my go to news sources. I just make sure I read many others, because it is very often hyperbolic. Thank you for what you do Cory Doctorow, you are appreciated, clickbait and all.

PS.
“Henry Ford Was a Racist” (an appropriate title for this piece) is not news. Hence our frustration.

Yeah I agree, but we that is how we are where we are today. People don’t check. And unlike some sites who are known for being propaganda, slanted, or one sided, BB I don’t think has that reputation. Yet.

And yet people checking and correcting is where we get this “conflict”. Everyone makes mistakes, but I rarely see corrections or even updates to titles. Even the ex-Gawker network posts updates and corrections when their articles turn out to be wrong or premature.

As a separate note - not a direct reply:

And it’s another thing where some editors of BB are doing the same thing they point out other places do. It is hypocritical and I don’t like that. Yes, BB isn’t a news site - and neither is Facebook, but both can propagate ideas (for good and bad). Shouldn’t one hold themselves to a similar standard they hold others to?

That said, this sort of criticism isn’t to hate on BB. It’s to encourage it to be better. I think most of it is fair criticism.

This must be your theme song, as you love putting people in neat little boxes. @nungesser isn’t a concern trolley and he generally has pretty thought out arguments. At any rate, try countering points vs ad hominem.

Check out Indian Temple Dance. It makes nearly all martial arts look like weak sauce! (Do not get in a fight with an Indian Temple Dancer.)

@Mister44, is “boot scootin’” the same as clogging/buck dancing? In the really deep backwoods of the rural east coast, barn dances I’ve been to featured more clogging than square dancing. It’s a lot of fun.

Some of it is, and those who are genuinely offering constructive criticism are pretty easy to spot… but a lot of it isn’t.

Consider the sources.

Uh - I don’t know the different genres. I was talking about line dancing where they stomp and shuffle to a set routine.

I remember now you asking, yes that is what I was referring to.

This is “buck dancing” or clogging, in the style I learned while exploring backwoods West Virginia. The relationship with step dancing traditions from the Celtic parts of the UK is very obvious:

In the video below there’s a caller, like in a square dance (something I’ve never seen in person) but the dancing is definitely clogging.

If you were wearing hard-edged soles or heavy work boots, you’d bring a hunk of plywood to clog on so you didn’t tear a half inch out of the floorboards by the end of the night.

EDIT: I have just found boot scootin’ videos. Yep, that’s country line dancing alright!
