Where does he get off telling us how to pronounce something he invented ? Psshhhh.
I don’t know if that’s actually the case. I remember being confused the first time I heard someone pronounce it with a hard “g” because I’d never heard it before. I think the people who pronounce it that way just want to declare it a fait accompli and force the rest of his to accept it.
He invented an image format. He didn’t invent the letter “G” or the word “graphic.”
That honor belongs to the Children’s Television Workshop.
It needs to be said that he not only invented a great portable image format- he invented the first web and app-wide friendly video format. That’s really how GIFs found their purpose in the end. Supporting animated gif playback in anything you write is fairly trivial, compared to the extremely onerous task of supporting something like MPEG. Plus they fail gracefully. If the software doesn’t support the animation extension, the first still frame is displayed. Small, portable, compatible video clips. Genius.
