What’s more useless than a graduate degree in history? One in “Interdisciplinary Humanities.”
But, hey, I got to read a lot on the Arts and Crafts movement.

I don’t think either is useless and don’t think the only people who get to pursue these degrees should be the one percent.
I’m just really tired of the completely pointless “STEM vs. humanities” narrative, because it doesn’t have to be either/or. It can be both. It should be both. A world where it’s not both is a world I really wouldn’t want to live in.
100% agreed and I say this as someone who has spent, literally, the last 22 years working in engineering workplaces with no engineering degree. I am a geek by inclination, working my way up, but my interests have also largely been in the humanities. I mean, hell, my doctoral program was Buddhist Studies. That said, I’ve thought of going back for a compsci degree on occasion.
It’s nice but if you can afford only one, go for STEM. The infrastructure of the civilization itself is hinging on these skills and knowledge. Poetry is just nice.
In the world of limited resources and crumbling infrastructure STEM has to be grossly prioritized.
There are too many people with humanities interests and way way too few technicians. Then we end up with cohorts of people who don’t even understand the materials they work with daily. Having at least rudimentary corrosion skills can save lives. Knowledge of medieval painters, not so.
I don’t want to live in a world where the humanities are not valued. Because it’s an inhuman world. The problem with crumbling infrastructure has nothing to do with the utter pittance that the humanities already get, it’s from hoarding by the wealthy. The only people this “STEM V. humanities” narrative benefits is those same people refusing to fund our civilization infrastructure. We can afford both, we just don’t want to.
