This is the sort of thing I find fascinating when taken in the context of Kepler’s Mysterium Cosmographium and the antecedent beliefs it was built on. Now we know that life has layers of complexity beyond what they were capable of understating at the time, but when you see images like this or contemplate molecular structures like benzene rings, it’s kind of remarkable how much they thought about the structure of life that wasn’t completely off base. Must have been mind-blowing to see these images for the first time.
Early illustrations of diatoms are similarly charming!
