He’s the same colour as the blonde girl on the diving board. Caucasian people often have black hair. You are right though people see what they want to see.
To call this “super racist” is a bit much. Also the use of super as an adverb getting very annoying.
That’s something I really appreciated about Lands’ End when my kids were little. They made a point of having diverse child models in their catalog…that included kids with physical or development disabilities as well as differences in race, size, hair, etc.
As stated numerous times already, that adjective was taken from the tweet in which this story originated.
As a person of color, I also don’t think this incident counts as “super racist”; just average, everyday racist.
Was the title overly hyperbolic? Absolutely.
Such is the case with most headlines on most social networks, in my experience; that’s how they draw people in.
But that doesn’t mean that all related conversation should be hindered just because the title could have been worded better.
And I am aware that there are many White people who have dark hair, but that really wasn’t the focal point here; instead it’s that 100% of the “cool” people are lighter than everyone else pictured… thereby possibly subconsciously reinforcing negative stereotypes that are already unfairly attributed to people of color.
I believe you that this is how the USA operates. I’m just saying that not everybody is american, and it can be a good idea to check these things next time before activating the pitchforks. (I see that he turned out american in the end, but it was still bizarre how he then ended up being schooled because of the sin of being raised without this particular kind of discrimination [against italian people, if I understood correctly? i was talking about soda guy] - knowing about history is important, but if someone ends up not meeting this kind of information, is [not only not discriminating, but not even knowing about how that particular group could be hated,] not one of the better outcomes? “Little Jetson Jr, shame on you for not knowing why your uncle is unusual, I know that he and his husband are perfectly unremarkable for you, but let me teach you 13 useful slurs the backwards people in the 20th century used to yell at guys like him - not knowing those would make you a homophobe”… idk. but my comment wasn’t necessarily about him.
)
There was just an article about that new “Game Developer Barbie”. A female game dev wanted one, so her husband went to get her one … and found they only came in white. So he ended up buying another non-white Barbie and the Game Dev Barbie so that he could make one that looked like his wife.
Well that’s a very sensible answer, thank you. (It would be nice to see that first, instead of accusations and memes. What? No I didn’t say anything that wasn’t me )
I see the tone police have arrived. Thank god! People are outraged and using sarcasm and hyperbole and gifs to make their points! Now maybe we can have a sensible logical calm conversation!
As @ficuswhisperernoted, “super racist” came from this John Sawyer tweet which brought the poster to national attention. In terms of clickbait titles on Boing Boing, this doesn’t really rate. It’s a direct copy of the headline the Washington Post used (which Boing Boing [via]'d).
