Ta-Nehisi Coates makes the case for reparations to Congress

Good point. Typical.

Yeah, we’re both female-identifying members who’s names start with M; we must all be the same person!

I know, right!

Additionally, since we seem to have people who literally believe that money will be taken directly out of the pockets of white people and give to black folks on a silver platter, here is a good break down on what HR 40 aims to do… it’s literally to have a commission on slavery and structural racism… that’s it:

Oh, the horror!

Clearly, we can’t have universal health care if we’re having a commission on slavery! /s

I was thinking, “YOU KNOW … maybe this is NOT the best issue to run on in an election year”

but then I remembered

  • It’s NOT AN ELECTION YEAR

  • Ta-Nehisi Coates is NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

  • He’s talking to CONGRESS, which IS the deliberative body that is supposed to figure this shit out

SO … it’s all good then, carry on

And your evidence for this is…?

And please don’t somehow revert to the past. I’m asking for evidence that some rich person today is pulling the strings of say, Ta-Nehisi Coates, or that some particular elite cabal demanded these hearings. Because absent such evidence, you’re seeing a mirage of your own making.

I agree, it’s weird to look at the renewed call for reparations as anything but an outgrowth of the resurrection of the political left in this country. “Leftist opinions are growing in popularity, so this leftist belief in particular, being espoused by someone who has invested years into the progressive cause of equality, must be a right-wing plutocratic plant to destroy us” is one heck of a weird flex, but ok.

This made a lot of sense to me.

Remember, kids: the only thing worse than racism is having your words or actions labeled as racist.

that won’t change anything if we still have idiots and racists in Congress.
if you want to improve this country you have to vote in decent people in Congress. and vote OUT the corporate slugs.

:musical_note: No, you can’t out-vote 'em
The rules is still golden

If you press your ear to the turf that is stolen
You can hear the sound of limitations exploding :musical_note:

…but vote anyway. The cost is minimal, and miracles sometimes do happen.

But also think about what to do if voting doesn’t work.

Such ignorance is a beautiful thing to behold, isn’t? Such a testament to how effective the American educational system is at creating ignoramuses.

I am against targeted reparations especially as a growing part of the American nation is becoming poor. For one, it would pit those like me who wonder if this is the month that they get evicted, or like me have gone to bed so hungry that they have a problem going to sleep, against a group that will be perceived as being rewarded for their appearance rather than their character or even their present needs.

However, this grotesque lack of understanding of the past is unpleasant to note, and helps explain the continuing popularity of racism, but then groups like the Dunning School, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and even the Citizens Councils have worked really hard to successfully spread beautiful lies. And really, studying American history can be a gut punch, so I guess fantasies can be attractive. The near extermination of the natives, the centuries of enslavement and oppression of blacks, even the continuing existence of a large white underclass gives the lie to American exceptionalism and the American Dream.

It looks like this story really whacked a nerve, which is understandable, truly.

I would ask that whatever you might think of my opinions, which could be mistaken, that you realize that politics, economics, society itself is multi layered, and while something might be good, it might not be right. A poison chalice, because what is obvious might not be real.

Just look at the propaganda that the American government is putting out on Iran as many try to create a war. Venezuela where our government tried to manufacture a coup. Or too often the police after they murder someone because “they feared for their safety.” Or the wealthy Blue states like California cannot find ways to fully fund colleges, create statewide healthcare, or find enough health for the forty thousands plus homeless, not to mention the RV dwellers. The eighth largest economy on Earth with the “liberal” Democratic Party controlling the state and nothing besides words happen.

That is the reason I think reparations will be used only to motivate the useful idiots. I could be wrong. It would be nice if it were true. But I think that only thing that matters is getting those votes come Election Day. Then nothing but excuses and I have been seeing this for decades.

Please do not be fooled. Do believe the smooth words. Look at their votes. Look at their actions. Look at how others will react. Just look.

in the last election, one State voted on a Proposition to make gerrymandering illegal in that State. People came out to vote and it passed. 49 more States to go.

Being involved in this system isn’t’ easy but if we want it to work, we all have to stay involved. Voting is more powerful than you may realize. The trick is to use it and use it wisely.

vote OUT corporate politicians who are slaves to corporations and are not voting for YOUR INTERESTS.

We are facing an immediate and apocalyptic global climate catastrophe, the USA currently holds thousands of children in concentration camps, American police murder a thousand Black people every year and there is a very high chance of the USA launching yet another catastrophic war of aggression in the near future.

If your response to this relies upon gradual incremental change, you have failed to grasp the nature of the situation.

So you’re against something that’s the right thing to do just because some don’t understand that it’s the right thing to do?

How about instead being for the education of those who remain ignorant on why it’s the right thing to do?
