This is one of those paintings that moved me as a child, Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” being the other.

Wow, thanks so much for this post. Last year we moved to a new town and the local historical society has an exhibition of Homer’s works I still haven’t had the time (well, kid-free time) to visit. He frequently visited and painted scenes of the area. It seems that at least two paintings show where our house would eventually be built! This article prompted me to finally look into it. Thanks!

I am familiar with this painting but until i read this blog post i couldn’t have told you if you’d asked me is a Black man or a White man piloting the boat. I thought it was about being caught in a storm.
