@simonize Recognising the reality of who controls the levers of power is a different thing from pretending those in control represent the people. (Although I’m sure you didn’t mean to imply it did, the point still needs making.)

i think they believed the military commanders that it wasn’t necessary, and they probably believed setting up a system for getting people out would sound like defeatism - both here and in afghanistan
in retrospect, absolutely. but i think they were really blindsided by this.
i for one still don’t see how such a relatively small number of people can take over every city in a country, and not be spread thin. i seriously wonder how many people have in each city and checkpoint? a hundred, a thousand? and it’s that level of force that caused the country’s military to up and run?
to me, it’s just wild. there’s got to be some serious money that’s helped this along. to officials and commanders and the like to get them to stand down

Not that any of it matters to the money-flow. It’ll find a new way to trickle out & up. Next step for the warhawks and the Intel boys will be some cack-handed attempt to recruit for another ersatz Mujahideen, but THIS TIME! With PNAC Characteristics to oppose the Taliban, which will a: make matters exponentially worse and b: make lots of people very rich while women & children die horribly. They’re probably brainstorming it and cutting deals right now. Fuck, I hate everything.
