Yes, let’s go to a tourist site to marvel at the ways we’ve destroyed nature in order to stimulate tourism “They damaged this tree to bring us here, and here we are!”
If it makes you feel better this particular tree is on private land, and at the time that the opening was cut in the 1930s the area was being logged without restriction. So that tree was more fortunate than many in the area and tourism is a much better option than logging.
There was a much more famous drive-thru tree in Yosemite National park that had the tunnel cut in 1881 and fell in 1969. Fortunately National Parks no longer allow trees to be cut up as tourist attractions, and haven’t for a long long time.
That whole drive from roughly Leggett to Crescent City is beautiful.
Particularly the short side route via Avenue of the Giants.
Along the way, don’t forget to stop and wave at Paul Bunyan at the Trees of Mystery.
That RV in the background of the photo sure looks like it would be a tight fit…
They should probably put up some flashing lights. Maybe lower the roadway…
how far is it from there to an alligator farm or tarantula ranch?
I had to replace a mirror on our minivan after my wife and kids visited that tree on a drive up to Oregon.
