"The Great Race of Mercy"

“What a trip! What a trip! Blizzards all the way! Snow 20 feet deep! But we had to get that serum through! It was mush, mush, mush all night! Come on, mush, mush, mush, mush, mush! Suddenly, the glacier cracks! There’s a roar! Tons of ice! NO ESCAPE! AAAAAAAHHHHHHH! How things been with you?”

Domestic rats and domestic foxes date to historical times, and silver foxes in particular to twentieth-century research into domestication.

My whole life this race has been The Iditarod.

I have never heard the great race of mercy term, and have followed the race several times from a distance. Has it been rebranded?

But there IS a movie! Kevin Bacon is Balto! Phil Collins is two polar bears!

Not sure whether you’re joking, but I’ll bite

The recreational event has been run under the ‘Iditarod’ name since the early 1970s, but the life-or-death, one-off ‘Race of Mercy’, transporting the diptheria vaccine, was in 1925.

I’ve never heard the 1925 event described as a Great Race, I guess.

The tagline for the event is “The Last Great Race”. But nobody up here calls it anything but The Iditarod.
