What does it mean to be “editor” of Wordle?
It’s a worthy question, and one that I asked myself in my first weeks as the game’s inaugural editor. Wordle Editor is a new title, and a new responsibility. The game is beautifully designed to be mostly self-sustaining, but there are times when a light human touch can steer the ship past trouble spots. Fortunately, there were some precedents to look to, in Spelling Bee and other Times games, which helped establish some guiding principles.
In the first month, I experimented with random and nonrandom methods for choosing answers, ultimately settling on a system that uses a random generator combined with some editorial organization of the word sequence through the week. In this system, I research and test each word for usage, familiarity and solvability before scheduling.
I’ve gained valuable insight by reviewing Wordler comments since The Times acquired the game in 2022. I’ve learned that Wordle lovers are a passionate community. We care about each word: how challenging it is to solve; what a word means, primarily and secondarily; whether an answer is fair and familiar, or too obscure, or too topical; and whether the solution comes down to a lucky guess or skillful deduction.
In my opinion, Josh Wardle and Palak Shah were Wordle’s true first editors. They created and curated a perfect game for today’s online puzzlers. It’s a privilege to be carrying their vision forward into 2023.
