I saw the answer immediately after my first 3 regular openers, but rejected it because obviously that’s a proper noun, it’s a brand name
after meticulously trying every possible combination (none of which were even a word because for my given tiles there were literally no actual words that could even be played, but I figured it was some word I’d never heard of – that’s happened to me twice before) until I played the solution out of frustration. leading to much more frustration when it was accepted.

It’s also just the name of the naturally-occurring mineral which inspired the brand name…
I hear your frustration, though. I had similar thoughts as you, and I had to look it up before I played the word, to make sure I wasn’t confusing it with boron, the chemical element.

yeah it’s a bit confusing because when you buy boxes of Borax (which I do regularly,) it’s full name is Twenty Mule Team Borax but the little write-up explaining what it is repeatedly only refers to it as capital-B “Borax,” the story confirming that the mineral content was given the name so they could sell boxes of it. their use of capital-B cements it as a proper noun.
but the real frustration with both Borax and snafu is that Wordle is obviously a game for word nerds, but those solutions PUNISH YOU for being a word nerd that knows the origin of those words. like OK, they’re both old and common enough that they’ve entered the dictionary, but how am I supposed to know that unless I look up every possible proper noun, abbreviation, and acronym beforehand? can I play Xerox? what about “totes”? I’ve never seen a plural word as a solution but it is common parlance as an abbreviation for “totally.”
where does it end? augghhhh!

Yeah, I totes get the frustration. And it seems so random sometimes, which words the word games will allow or not allow (looking at you, NYT Spelling Bee—one that often doesn’t allow perfectly good words!!!) I like to play Squaredle, in part because even if you find a word that isn’t on their list of words for the answers for that game, it will usually put the word onto your “bonus” list.
I dunno, though…if I’m reading correctly, Merriam-Webster says that the word “borax” has been in use since the 14th century! That’s definitely before the “Twenty Mule Team Borax” product name was ever a glint in someone’s eye. I say we shouldn’t let the capitalists take over perfectly good words. So that leaves me feeling fine that Wordle used “borax” as an answer (even though it took me five tries to get it, LOL)
