The hockey-stick from hell: US incarceration per 100,000 people, 1890-today

I’m not sure why the prison system isn’t a topic that can be pushed in all directions with pressuring a small but influential group. I would even argue that all political changes are caused by small(ish) groups, is there an example for a sudden shift of opinion covering the majority of all citizens?

Well, Gay rights, no. Gary marriage, probably, depending on what “sudden” means here.

I think it’s fair to call the switch with gay marriage “sudden” (I should have looked at polls before posting the above comment…). In only one decade the opinion changed from ~ 30 % in favor to ~ 50 % - this is sudden and notable imo.

Someone should restructure the WP article on the public opinion of same-sex marriage in the United States. Unorganised mess.
