I believe I saw this as a double feature with ‘Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared Syn.’ Good lord that was a different time.

No, it pretty definitely was meant to be a comedy. Nobody but nobody in that thing was taking anything seriously. Great movie.
Going to have to see it again now.
