I’m really not looking forward to my 4S becoming obsolete, because the ridiculous size of the new ones is going to make it hard for me to decide to stay with Apple.

If it does, you can get a 5s pretty inexpensively now. They’re a definite step up from the 4s, only a tiny bit larger, and more sturdy than the 6.
When it comes time to replace your 4S, you’re probably going to have a hard time finding any new phone that’s as small as a pre-6 iPhone.
