Agreed: Lord of Light is magnificent – one of my favorite novels by anyone, ever.
However: beware the Avon edition, which is the singularly worst typeset book I have ever struggled to read: transposed and duplicated lines of text on page after page … God only knows what was omitted. Here is the cover:
I started reading Zelazny when I was 10 and I tried to read the school library starting at the end. Thinking back, I’d love to meet the librarian who thought to stock an elementary school library like that. I read my first Steinbeck there too. Wonderful woman, whoever she was.
Thank you all for the other recommendations. I only have the Chronicles of Amber here (bought in adulthood, not still out on library loan). Sounds like I’ve been missing out.
