The Martian movie is better than the book (and that's OK)

It’s explained that he doesn’t have much bandwidth to send things to Earth so typing made perfect sense – he was using a jury-rigged system and not the actual communication system designed for the mission (which was lost/damaged).

Maybe I’ll pick them up again.

Sometimes I can forget plots and characters so completely that it’s like a new experience for me.

HOLLY: I’m at a loose end now. I don’t know what to do with meself.
LISTER: Holly, why don’t you just read everything all over again.
HOLLY: I was thinking it might help pass the time if I created a
perfectly functioning replica of a woman, capable of independent
decision-making and abstract thought and absolutely undetectable from
the real thing.
LISTER: (Sitting up eagerly) Well why don’t you, then?
HOLLY: Because I don’t know how. I wouldn’t even know how to make the
nose. Heh.
LISTER: Holly, is there something that you want?
HOLLY: Well, only if you’re not busy. Would you mind erasing some of my
memory banks?
LISTER: What for?
HOLLY: Well, if you erase all the Agatha Christie novels from my memory
bank, I can read 'em again tonight.
LISTER: How do I do it?
HOLLY: Just type, “HolMem. Password override. The novels Christie,
Agatha.” Then press erase.

LISTER jabs two-fingered on a keyboard.

LISTER: I’ve done it.
HOLLY: Done what?
LISTER: Erased Agatha Christie.
HOLLY: Who’s she, then?
LISTER: Holly, you just asked me to erase all Agatha Christie novels from
your memory.
HOLLY: Why should I do that? I’ve never heard of her.
LISTER: You’ve never heard of her because I’ve just erased her from your
smegging memory.
HOLLY: What’d you do that for?
LISTER: You asked me to!
HOLLY: When?
LISTER: Just now!
HOLLY: I don’t remember this.
LISTER: Oh, I’m going to bed. This is gonna go on all night.

Reporter hates popular novel turned into cool movie, news at 11. Big deal. The book was clearly a first novel and a light read but it was fun and took me all of a day to read.

We have a couple of those. They bring you food and drinks to your chair and they recline.
21 and over only. Best thing ever.

Heh. Yea, I most certainly enjoy the home theater, too.
One time we went to an IT vendor sponsored lunch event at the booze theater and the movie was that new Superman.
After lunch I took a nap since the movie was so bad. Getting paid to nap in a movie theater was pretty cool…

Apparently you can rent the theater out for private events, including video gaming. And Mr. Bells’ 40th birthday is coming up …

Yeah, agreed. While I still enjoyed film it left out a lot of the science and some things didn’t really make a lot of sense. For instance, why did he need to modify the rover? He seemed to have plenty of room in the film.

I definitely felt the opposite. While the visuals were great, the film lost a lot of the science and skipped a lot of Watney’s struggles.

As Simon Mayo points out, this should be called Watney’s Red Planet.
